19th International Symposium
Event Updates

We recently received communications from the Handbell Association of Hong Kong (HAHK) regarding their plans for the 19th International Handbell Symposium and how the event may be impacted by the current unrest and protests in Hong Kong.

Over the past three months, many parts of Hong Kong have experienced protests and demonstrations. However, the area that includes the planned venue and hotels for the Symposium have been largely untouched. In three months, only one protest took place at a bus station in the area–an area that is a 10-minute drive from the venue. Protests did reach the international airport, resulting in flight cancellations and delays, but no one not directly involved in the protests were physically harmed. The US State Department currently has a Level 2 Advisory listed for travel by US citizens to Hong Kong. A Level 2 Advisory advises “increased caution.”

HAHK has made the decision to delay registration for the 19th IHS so they can monitor the situation over the next 6 weeks. On November 1, they will make a final decision about how to move forward with the event. To help them with this decision, they have asked all member guilds of the International Handbell Committee to survey their membership in order to estimate how many might attend the Symposium.

To that end, please take a moment to complete this survey regarding your plans to attend the 19th International Handbell Symposium.

Video of the Month

The Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir performing “Rush Hour” (an original composition by Jack Noble White) March 17, 2018 at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. This original composition is meant to bring to mind the chaos driving in rush hour traffic. The Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir executive director, R. Kent Schmedel, built a box with four different fully functioning car horns that are powered by a rechargeable battery for this unique song.
