Call for Faculty

HMA Seminar Experience at International Handbell Symposium 2022 in Nashville

Handbell Musicians of America and the 20th International Handbell Symposium Planning Committee are seeking faculty to present during a special pre-International Symposium event.

The 20th International Handbell Symposium (IHS2022) is at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, TN, August 1-6, 2022. The optional HMA Seminar Experience is a two-day event, July 31-August 1, offering eight class sessions for registrants of IHS2022 who want to arrive early and participate in additional learning opportunities with experienced U.S. instructors.

All selected faculty will be expected to teach in a minimum of four class sessions. This can be achieved with a 2-4 class track, or multiple single session classes.

Application Process & Requirements

  • Those submitting must have an individual Handbell Musician Membership or be the primary contact for an organization’s Handbell Musician Membership.
  • Consider all aspects of handbell musicianship in all settings as you develop your class ideas. The committee strives to select a wide variety of classes. We also encourage innovation and new ideas. However, please make sure any new concepts are fully tested and vetted prior to presentation at this event.
  • Those interested in teaching at the event must submit a separate Class Submission Application for each class topic/idea they would like to present using the form at the link below. ONLY submissions completed using the form below will be accepted.
  • Only applicants who have taught at a previous National Seminar will be considered for this event.
  • Deadline for submission is 5:00 PM EDT, July 9, 2021. Applicants will be notified of committee selections by September 1, 2021.
  • Class sessions at the HMA Seminar Experience will be 75-minutes long. Topics may be offered as single classes or multi-session courses. Whether or not classes are repeated will depend on the number and quality of submissions received.
  • Those instructors selected will receive two nights of hotel and up to $300 for airfare or mileage for travel to Nashville.

Questions regarding the process should be directed to [email protected]

We’re Back!

There’s Still Time to Register for National Seminar 2021 Either In-Person or Virtually

Registration is open for National Seminar, Master Classes in Conducting and Composition, and Distinctly Teen in Glendale Arizona.

At National Seminar, you will have the chance to participate in educational and engaging classes; enjoy performances by some of our best choirs, ensembles, and soloists; browse and shop through exhibit booths from handbell publishers, retailers, manufacturers, and more.

In the Master Class in Conducting, 13 individual conducting students will work one-on-one with master conductor, Dr. William Payn. Each will be assigned one piece to learn and conduct under Dr. Payn’s tutelage. Participating conducting students will form the choir that each will lead. The event concludes with a final showcase concert where students will conduct their pieces for an audience. PLEASE NOTE: The application deadline for conductors has passed, but we are still accepting ringer/observers. Much can be learned by ringing and observing the individual conductor instruction.

The Master Class in Composition will offer up to six composers the opportunity to work one-on-one with Sondra Tucker to hone their skills in composing and arranging. Students will have access to keyboards and ample time to work on compositions. There will also be opportunities for group discussion and collaboration.

Distinctly Teen is designed for individual young ringers (8th–12th grade) who wish to stretch their ringing skills and challenge their musicianship.
Participants will spend 2 ½ days working on intermediate to advanced repertoire and developing skills in handbell technique and general musicianship under the leadership of Barb Walsh. The event schedule will combine dedicated rehearsal and class time for Distinctly Teen with the opportunity to attend classes offered as part of the Handbell Musicians of America National Seminar.

Virtual Options: Not yet ready to attend in person? We have plenty of virtual options for National Seminar this year. Some of our in-person classes will be broadcast online and we’ve added a number of virtual-only international classes to the schedule as well, so whether you’re inclined to travel or not, we’ve got you covered.

National Seminar Silent Auction

We are gearing up for an exciting in-person National Seminar, which will include virtual options as well, and as usual, the Silent Auction will be a big part of it. Following the success of our completely online auction last year, and since we will have a number of virtual attendees to Seminar this year, we are hosting a hybrid silent auction with both online and onsite items, so that all may participate. So, whether you participate in National Seminar with us onsite in Arizona or virtually from your home, everyone will have the opportunity to bid on a great lineup of donated items.

Some ideas for silent auction donations include themed baskets or boxes, handcrafted items, music commissions, virtual coaching session, a weekend or a week in a timeshare, handbell books and music…the types of items that will make this a successful silent auction are limited only by your imagination.

Video of the Month

This issue’s Video of the Month shows that you do not need a large set of handbells (or even handbells at all, as handchimes suffice just as well) to give an effective performance. Here Derek (YouTube channel DSLightning21) gives an awesome performance of Christine Anderson’s “Patriotic Medley” arrangement (piano arrangement by Daniel Kramlich) on handchimes, and he does it quite well. **BONUS! Go to Derek’s YouTube channel to find a link to a video of “Family Matter’s” Steve Urkel playing handbells late at night. You’ll be glad you did.**

Extended through June 30

We hope you all are staying healthy and coping well during this time that most Americans have been asked to stay at home to help slow and eventually stop the spread of COVID-19.

To help ease the anxiety and isolation of social distancing and staying inside, Handbell Musicians of America has extended the opening of our members-only site to all handbell musicians, members and non-members alike, through June 30. There you will find the online edition of our quarterly journal, Overtones, archives of Member-Notes and Member-Chats, and a wealth of other handbell resources, all for you to enjoy during this time.

Brian’s Music Notes

Crown Him With Many Crowns

Arr. Matthew Compton

3-5 octaves handbells
Level 3
AG35340

In thrilling fashion, this setting of DIADEMATA by Matthew Compton is flat out fun to ring! Filled with speedy mallet work, “Crown Him with Many Crowns” takes a festive tone from the first beat. The mallet patterns are easily learned and are used in the introduction and to accompany the first verse and coda. Verse two pivots from C Major to D Major and is accompanied by bass and lower treble chimes. Verse 3 shifts back to C Major and adds Marts and Mart lifts for excitement. It closes with a coda based on the opening material. This is a winner you will want to take a look at.

You can hear a recording and purchase the music from Lorenz here.

You can view the score and hear a recording below:

Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne.
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of Him Who died for thee,
and hail Him as thy matchless king through all eternity.

George Job Elvey (b. Canterbury, England, 1816; d. Windlesham, Surrey, England, 1893) As a young boy, Elvey was a chorister in Canterbury Cathedral. Living and studying with his brother Stephen, he was educated at Oxford and at the Royal Academy of Music. At age nineteen Elvey became organist and master of the boys’ choir at St. George Chapel, Windsor, where he remained until his retirement in 1882. He was frequently called upon to provide music for royal ceremonies such as Princess Louise’s wedding in 1871 (after which he was knighted). Elvey also composed hymn tunes, anthems, oratorios, and service music.

Composed for Bridges’s text by George J. Elvey (PHH 48), DIADEMATA was first published in the 1868 Appendix to Hymns Ancient and Modern. Since that publication, the tune has retained its association with this text. The name DIADEMATA is derived from the Greek word for “crowns.” Source: Hymnary.org
