Ostinato is the musical term for a continually repeated phrase or rhythm. This can be as simple as repeating the same four quarter notes as a hymn embellishment or it can be a consistent rhythm moving to different notes.
Tip: Use a pentatonic melody the first few times. Select a melody from the Pentatonic Melody list and string the pentatonic scale (refer to the pentatonic scale lesson if you need assistance).
There are many ways to approach creating an ostinato phrase. Here are some ideas:
Option 1: Review the music and find a rhythm that you like that is not more than 2 measures. Play the rhythm on the bells. Experiment with different notes until you find a combination that is pleasing to the ear. Repeat this pattern as a hymn embellishment. Example: Come, Let Us Eat – I chose to use the eighth notes run (8 X 1/8). Apply pitches from the pentatonic scale. See attached music.
Option 2: Look for a 1-2 measure melodic phrase. Repeat this phrase as a hymn embellishment. Example: Melody = Amazing Grace; repeat the first 6 beats (Amazing Grace) quietly as almost a whisper. See attached music.
Option 3: Based on a repeated rhythm, use a lead sheet and ring the pitches of a chord applying the selected rhythm. This is a bit more advanced and will be covered in a future lesson.
