On New Year’s Day, Washington, D.C. will be filled with the sounds of bells through change ringing peals, carillon recitals, Chinese and Korean bells, and even handbells from our own Virginia Bronze.

This all happens as part of the National Bell Festival. The festival is “the annual New Year’s Day celebration in Washington, D.C. On the first day of the year, bells in towers across the nation’s capital ring out together and unite the community around listening parties, eclectic events, and special programming.”

In addition to bells, the National Bell Festival will feature chamber music, a 5K run, whisky tasting, and more.

Handbells to be featured in bus-top pop-up concerts throughout the city

Among the many National Bell Festival events, Handbell Musicians of America has sponsored and helped to coordinate Bells on Wheels, a fun city bus tour of pop-up concerts featuring Virginia Bronze handbell ensemble.

From the National Bell Festival website, “In collaboration with Virginia Bronze and Big Bus Tours, we’re taking our show on the road! We’ll be zipping around the streets of D.C. to perform bus top pop-up concerts at sites across the city. Honk your horn to hear us ring!”

There will be a kick-off performance at the Washington Monument at noon, then they will head out on the Big Bus to perform mini concerts along the bus route, featuring pop favorites and iconic songs.
