HMA Governance – A Message from the National Board

The national board of the Handbell Musicians of America values your membership and wants to continue to seek ways to stay in touch with you. While we may see you at events or on social media, we know that you might have questions about what it is that we do. So, we’re introducing a national board update as a way to periodically let you know when we’ve met and what we have as topics before us.
But first, let us introduce ourselves:

  • P.L. Grove, President
  • Jill Fedon, President-Elect
  • Bill Mathis, At-Large Board Member
  • Linda Minnotte, At-Large Board Member
  • Derek Nance, At-Large Board Member
  • Jennifer Vangolen, At-Large Board Member
  • Kyle Webber, At-Large Board Member

The outgoing board secretary is Mike McCrary, who has served for the past six years. Coming on board to take his place this fall is Karen Eggert as the new board secretary. And if you aren’t aware, Jenny Cauhorn serves as the organization’s executive director.

Now that you know who we are, we want to advise you of our meeting this past spring by announcing that our first Board Meeting Summary is available for your review online. In addition, a new section has been created on the members only website – handbellmembers.org.  The summary from our spring meeting and any future meetings can be found at the HMA Governance link on the left side bar menu on the home page of handbellmembers.org.  At this link, you will also find annual financial reports, our policy governance document, and the national by-laws.  We hope this information will help you be more informed about the business of Handbell Musicians of America and the activities of the national board.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our many local or national events.

Music Notes from John Behnke

“Glory is Here Today”

Music takes time to learn, time to play, and time to create. It’s hard to speed up the process on any of these steps, and such was the course in the creation of this wonderful new arrangement. This month’s featured piece is Glory, AG35377, by Linda Boice and incorporates the hymn To God Be the Glory for 3-5 octaves of handbells and optional 3 octaves of handchimes at Level 2 difficulty.

Linda said, “The inspiration for “Glory” began as a simple tune I had jotted down on a piece of manuscript paper several years ago, with the intention of arranging a handbell piece based on it, someday. The paper was tucked into the far reaches of my briefcase until I could spend some quality time with it. “Someday” took longer than I’d planned, but sometimes life just gets in the way. Although the bulk of the piece remains as an original composition, I initially set out to make it entirely so. But as the piece developed, I began to have a desire to incorporate a well-known hymn tune of a triumphant nature. It didn’t take long to settle on “To God Be The Glory,” and the fit seemed good, appropriate, and natural.

Linda Boice is a new name to the AGEHR catalogue. She says, “I am a life-long resident of Southwestern Pennsylvania. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and have been serving in church music ministry for 35 years. In my current position at Center Presbyterian Church, McMurray, PA, I oversee the the whole of the church’s music ministries and direct the vocal, handbell, and recorder ensembles. I began ringing and working with bell choirs when a church that had just hired me had a desire to get their bells out of storage and start from scratch. I had nary a clue about how to implement a handbell program, but AGEHR classes, workshops and events got me on the way to a long and happy journey. Just getting those bells out of storage led to getting several churches to reignite their bell programs, to sharing in this music ministry with my daughters, and to carrying it to members of the communities around us. I have been a member of the national handbell guild for many years and have been a clinician for a couple of past Area 2 Festivals, in addition to providing classroom instruction for several Western PA handbell festivals and local churches. On a more personal note, music is the common thread of our family. My husband is a public school music educator and church musician. Our eldest daughter is a Music/English/Mass Media educator, church musician, and now the “Three Rivers Ringers” assistant conductor. And our youngest daughter is an Accountant and accomplished professional pianist.”

I asked Linda if she had a favorite part of her arrangement, Glory. She says, “I’m very fond of the relationship between the flowing eighth-note pattern in the upper treble and the syncopated rhythmic feel of the battery and bass – these themes are the framework that then serve to support that original tune. The chime part serves as a kind of descant, which would also work well on bells, orchestral bells, or Silver Melody Bells, if an organization has the unique experience of owning these instruments.”

After a six measure LV’d descending eighth note introduction, the original melody appears twice once in measure 7 and then again in with a descending descant with handchimes through measure 37. In measure 39 the B section occurs in A Minor, with the original A melody reappearing at m. 55 combined with the descending eighth note introductory material. In measure 72 comes the appearance of To God Be the Glory. In measure 87 comes the grand Coda where the introductory material is used again.

Linda says, “We recently had a read-through of the piece with my church handbell team; we’ll need to hash out a few measures for clarity, but in general, I think the piece is easily accessible for Level 2 ensembles.”

If you are looking for the “dirt” on Linda, here it is. Linda is a charter and current member of Three Rivers Ringers based in Pittsburgh, PA and directed by Nancy Lutz. And she says, “as time permits, she loves the diversion of working in her perennial flower beds. It’s her happy place!

We are glad that Glory, AG35377, grew and is now in full bloom.

Keep those bells and chimes ringing!

See & Hear the Music

Keep those bells and chimes ringing!
Until next month,

John Behnke, Music Editor
